Svenska Privatskolan i Uleåborg: Theme Projects

Saint Lucia

The day of Saint Lucia is a tradition in the Nordic countries which is celebrated on the 13th of December. In Finland it is mainly celebrated by the Swedish-speaking minority. Saint Lucia was a Christian martyr and saint who lived in the 3rd century. She brought food for the hiding Christians in the catacombs of Italy and today she is celebrated as a symbol light and hope. Saint Lucia brings the light to dark and cold winter days.

The tradition includes having a girl dress up as Saint Lucia in a white dress with a candle crown. Our school crowns the Lucia of Oulu. Lucia is chosen by voting for one of three candidates. The candidate who receives most votes is crowned in Rotuaari, which is a central place in our city. After the crowning Lucia with her maids and choir, consisting of our high-school students and teachers, tour around Oulu in hospitals, retirement and nursing homes. They bring light and joy to those in need by singing and reading poems.

During the Lucia tour the rest of our school takes part in charitable work by attending and enjoying our theme days. Both this year’s and last year’s theme has been immigrants. Last year we invited youths from a refugee home to play sports with us. This year we held a fair where we sold Finnish Christmas bakeries and used winter sports equipment to raise money via UNICEF for the kids of Syria.

Theme Days 2016

This week in December 2016 we are going to have two theme days. On Thursday we will be baking pastries together with the Finnish Martha organisation, a Finnish organisation that provides advice and activities in home economics. The next day we will be serving our pastries to a group of young refugees who will be visiting our school. We will also be making Christmas decorations with them.

We think that it is important to help refugees integrate into the Finnish society and school system, and help them get used to the Finnish culture. As a society we should make sure that refugees feel welcome to Finland. We want to lend a helping hand and teach them a little bit more about Finnish people.

Liceo Scientifico A. Diaz, Caserta, Italy: Theme Projects

The Erasmus+ "Leading Lights" team of teachers at Liceo Scientifico A.Diaz Caserta are involved in this year's school project "European citizenship: identities and diversities (challenges and opportunities)". The aim of this project, developed by the Departments of History and Philosophy, Italian and Foreign languages, is to involve the students in school activities and conferences concerning: - the role of school education in the building of an active citizenship; - the role of local and national economic policies in the wider system of international economic policies; - the contribution of national cultural identities to the process leading to European citizenship; - the problems related to human rights. We have hosted the 1st conference on 26th November. Our students have met university teachers of Economics and History, experts of issues related to constitutionalism and contemporary history and have learnt more about Italian institutions, in particular about our parliamentary system, comparing it to other countries’ systems. A week before this conference, some classes from our Liceo went with their teachers on a day trip to Rome and had a guided tour of our Parliament to see the place where important decisions are made every day and laws are examined and passed.

On the 1st December 2016 at Liceo Scientifico A.Diaz Caserta: 2nd meeting of the project "European citizenship: getting to know each other", the school hosted the Imam of a local mosque as a representative of a Muslim cultural association to share ideas with students about religion, society and the relationship between different cultures. The students appreciated this opportunity and asked many questions to the speakers during the conference.

The students and colleagues of Liceo Scientifico A. Diaz participated in a TV program and debated issues related to the negation of human rights in the world, in particular the practice of torture. The students have also shared their ideas about the problem with Carlo Bonini, author of a book recently published in Italy, "Il corpo del reato" ("Material evidence").

ACTIVITY 1

In this blog we will be showing different activities our students are carrying out to lead a light on the lifes of so many people who need some a little of our time, dedication and warmth,.
For example, our students from Vocational Studies ( social integration) and the NGO ASPANIES ,which work with people with mental disabilities, have organized in our centre different workshops such as dancing and handicrafts to be implemented with students from our centre.

With this activity we want to develop collaborative creative work, improve  everyone´s social and communicative skills, create an atmoshphere of mutual understanding and empathy, get to know  the dreams expectations of young people with mental disabilities and learn how to adapt learning materials to their needs.

ACTIVITY 2

Here are an example of the decorations of the doors of our High school: the different symbols represent the topics of our project : FIGHTING AGAINST INEQUALITY, VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, SUPPORT OF INTEGRATION OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES, MULTICULTURALITY AND PEACE EDUCATION
